Advanced Welding Alliance

Advanced Manufacturing and the AUKUS Industrial Base

Australia’s strategic environment is changing rapidly, placing renewed emphasis on sovereign industrial capability and resilient manufacturing supply chains. Advanced fabrication technologies will play a critical role in supporting the defence, energy, resources, and infrastructure sectors that underpin national security and economic strength.

Through the AUKUS partnership between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, there is increasing focus on developing shared industrial capability to support the production, sustainment, and modernisation of advanced defence platforms. Technologies such as additive manufacturing and cold spray metal deposition are emerging as key enablers of this new industrial ecosystem.

These technologies allow complex metal components to be produced, repaired, and upgraded more quickly and efficiently than traditional manufacturing methods. They also support distributed manufacturing models, enabling parts to be produced closer to the point of use while reducing reliance on fragile global supply chains.

For regions such as Central Queensland, which already possess strong capabilities in heavy fabrication, welding, mining equipment manufacturing, and engineering services, these technologies present significant opportunities for industrial growth.

Existing expertise in metal fabrication, machining, maintenance, and equipment rebuild provides a strong foundation for the adoption of advanced manufacturing processes that can support both defence and commercial industries.

The Advanced Welding Alliance connects regional manufacturers with emerging advanced fabrication technologies, research organisations, and international industry partners across the AUKUS alliance. By supporting collaboration and capability development, the Alliance seeks to help Australian manufacturers participate in the next generation of defence and industrial supply chains.

Through the integration of advanced welding, additive manufacturing, and cold spray deposition technologies, regional manufacturing centres can play an increasingly important role in Australia’s future industrial and strategic capability.
